The bedroom is a place where you are supposed to relax and let down your guard at the end of a day. As such, your decorating efforts in this space should be focused on making it as peaceful as possible. This can be accomplished using a combination of color, art, and texture, which emphasizes tranquility in order to foster an environment that is conducive to rest and recuperation.

Color may be the single most powerful element in your decorating toolbox. It can affect a person on a deep, subconscious level, altering their mood, their perceptions, and even the way they behave in a given environment. In the bedroom, the right colors can be extremely effective at helping to foster serenity and peace. On the other hand, the wrong color combinations can make the room a more nervous space, where it will be harder to fall asleep and rest though the night.

Many blue and green tones are considered especially effective at evoking serenity in the human psyche. Blue colors simulate pictures of the ocean and the sky, while green is a rather powerful symbol of life, and the natural world. Each of these, used in appropriate combinations can be soothing elements that will help to bring tranquility back into the bedroom.

On the other hand red, orange, yellow, and other bright, fiery, violent colors will have the opposite affect, speeding up the pace of the space and making it a more intense environment. If you have no problem relaxing but actually find waking up to be difficult, these colors can help to change the nature of the room to fit your personality.

Texture refers simply to the way things feel. Hard textures, such as stone, steal, or hard molded plastic, tend to make things seem formal, and even a little uncomfortable. On the other hand silk, satin, cotton, and other soft materials will make a space seem more comfortable, and will invite the occupants to relax, and ease comfortably into the space.

Art is often the physical manifestation of some inherent psychological idea, emotion, or philosophy. As such, choosing soothing decorative pieces for the bedroom is simply a matter of looking at your options, and being honest about what each piece evokes in you. If a work of art is inspiring and dramatic, hanging it on your bedroom wall and looking at it probably won't help you to go to sleep at night. However if you find a portrait, sculpture, or other decorative piece that makes you feel content, or happy in a slow, gentle kind of way, then you have probably located the perfect piece for your sea of tranquility.

Developing a relaxing environment in the bedroom will ultimately depend on your ability to coordinate these 3 elements, in such a way as to create a space that is comforting to you. Every individual is different, but it is important to put in that extra effort, because it will pay dividends on your tranquility, and your ability to face the world when you wake up refreshed each morning.
