The Little Touches That Say So Much

Have you ever gone into a room where everything just seems to match or to be an important part of the overall design and theme? Nothing seems overdone or just there because; everything seems to have a place and a relation to the room as a whole. This look of theme and flow in a room is not difficult to accomplish if you have an eye for detail and a good sense of what matches and what will seem out of place or overdone.

One of the many ways to add to a room is to use items in non-traditional ways, but still in keeping with the style of a room. For example, larger groups of vases in a corner starting with one taller vase flanked by two or three small, unique vases can fill up a corner without adding a large piece of furniture. By carefully coordinating the colors of the vases to match or compliment the color scheme of the room, you can add that little extra. These taller floor vases don't need to be filled with flowers or dried arrangements, however a few large dried palm fronds or bamboo poles can add a richness and touch of style to an earthy colored room.

Groups of candles in a variety of colors or in a completely monochromatic scheme also simple yet elegant centerpieces and decorative accents. Use larger pillar type candles and then smaller geometric candles or even round candles of different sizes surrounding the different sized pillar candles in the center. Stetting the grouping on a metallic surface or decorative tray will reflect the light from the candles and add to the intimate appeal of a room.

Lighting adds a whole different atmosphere to a room. Direct, bright overhead lights are great for kitchens and work areas, but rooms for relaxing and resting often are more suited to subtle table and floor lamps that give a more inviting and warm appearance. Using sconces on the walls or even having candle sconces is a nice touch to highlight a wall or area of the room with soft, subtle type lighting.

Plants, either a very good quality silk or live plant, will add to a room and make it appear elegant and relaxing. If you have always been told you don't have a green thumb, consider trying pothos, ivy, ferns or bamboo plants that really just need water once a week to keep growing and looking fantastic. A plant can be used as a living centerpiece on a table but it can also hang down to fill in a corner or add color and texture to a longer stretch of bare wall.

Finally use color to your advantage. Pick a strong color that draws the eye and matches your theme and color scheme for the room. Use this color in accent pieces, picture frames, throw pillows and even in rugs. Don't over play the use of the color, but try to use it to pull the room together and make everything appear to be following the theme. Taking your time to find just the right items is important, and don't rush to get everything all at once, take your time and select pieces that really work with what your are trying to create.
