Designers forecasts for home trends this year are out, and many of them have said that updated light fixtures leads the pack for a must have in your decorating tool box. However, anyone who has tried to buy lighting that is outside the usual paper shade and metal base knows that updated lighting can mean a drain on the pocketbook. Did you know that DIY lighting projects are budget friendly and easy even for a beginner? Here are seven DIY budget lighting projects to help you keep up with the trends, and with your bank account.

Our featured project above is a DIY pendant lamp from a colander, from Shelterness. Read the comments following the project instructions for lots of great hints!

This string globe light isn’t a new project, they have been floating around the blogosphere for awhile now. But I like how BHG doesn’t overthink it, and uses it as a hanging lamp rather than having to replace an overhead light and hook it into the electrical system. All you need is some string, fabric stiffener, a ballon and a hanging lamp kit from Ikea or your hardware store.  Instructions are here.

The Stanley Clan created this incredible up-cycled DIY wood light fixture out of two old wagon wheels and some old wood, with a lamp kit from the hardware store. (And, a heavy rope!)

Ashley at Under the Sycamore created this incredible inexpensive DIY Anthropologie inspired light. Great step by step instructions! It could  work in both a country flavor home, or industrial modern!

Recaptured Charm has a tutorial to make this dollar store craft box lamp. This is creative! And thrifty!

I love, love, LOVE this modern branch pendant light from decor8. Complete instructions are right on the site from a guest blogger in Sweden. Gotta make this! Looks like a very expensive light fixture from a catalog that I know well!

Lastly, let HGTV teach you how to make this stacked book DIY lamp. Choose one of these projects to update any room fast, on a tight budget! (And with a lot of creativity!)
