Designers forecasts for home trends this year are out, and many of them have said that updated light fixtures leads the pack for a must have in your decorating tool box. However, anyone who has tried to buy lighting outside of the usual boring paper shade and metal base, knows that updated lighting can mean a drain on the pocketbook. Did you know that DIY light fixtures are budget friendly, and easy even for a beginner? Here are some creative DIY light fixture projects to help you keep up with the trends, and with your bank account.

DIY Light Fixtures

West Elm Knock Off Light Fixture

We love West Elm. Love it. And if you do too, hop on over to ‘Designer Trapped‘ and learn how to make a knock off version of their famous bentwood pendant light for a fraction of what the original costs!

Basket Light Fixture

Learn how to turn an ordinary basket into a really charming DIY light fixture with this tutorial from ‘Sugar & Cloth‘. This one is super simple and inexpensive, and really does add a lot to this pretty and fresh room.

Drum Shade Pendant Light DIY

The ‘Little by Little Home‘ took a drum lamp shade they found at Home Goods, and used it to recreate their outdated dining room chandelier. It looks awesome, and it’s an easy DIY! (Kind of a theme here, right?)

Boho Beaded DIY Light Fixture

This boho style pendant light looks complicated, but is a pretty easy woodworking and crafting project from ‘Jen Woodhouse‘. She does a great job of walking you through the steps with photos and clear instructions. You could save hundreds making this light instead of buying it!

Boob Light Makeover

Got ugly boob lights? Find out how ‘The DIY Mommy‘ used some spray paint, some macrame string and some wooden beads to give another boho look to an outdated fixture.

Barn Beam DIY Light Fixture

If you really want to impress, go check out the tutorial for this barn beam DIY light fixture over at ‘Two Feet First‘. What can we say, other than awesome. Need this, immediately. This would look great in both a modern home and a rustic one!

String Globe Light DIY

This string globe light isn’t a new project, they have been floating around the blogosphere for awhile now. But we like how BHG doesn’t overthink it, and uses it as a hanging lamp rather than having to replace an overhead light and hook it into the electrical system. All you need is some string, fabric stiffener, a ballon and a hanging lamp kit from Ikea or your hardware store.
